Irishman Craig Breen wins world-renowned Acropolis Rally

The Waterford driver picks up the biggest win of his career.

WATERFORD DRIVER CRAIG BREEN picked up his first European Rally Championship win this weekend when he drove his Peugeot 208 T16 to victory at the world famous Acropolis Rally.

The 24-year old bounced back from a water leak half-way through the first stage to hold second place behind his Dutch team-mate Kevin Abbring.

However, when Abbring was forced to retire with engine problems, the former Motorsport Ireland Irish Sports Council Young Driver of the Year and his co-driver Scott Martin took control of the event.

Although Breen already has World Rally Championship Academy and WRC2 titles to his name, his win in Greece is the highest profile win of his career to date.

Setting out for the final day’s gravel stages, the Irishman held a fifteen second lead over Citroen driver Bryan Bouffier but, despite the Frenchman’s efforts, Breen took top spot by eight seconds, with Kajetan Kajetanowicz of Poland third.

Breen and the 208 T16 will compete next weekend on the Fel’s Point Circuit of Kerry Rally in Tralee as a high speed test for round four of the ERC, the Circuit of Ireland Rally on Easter weekend.
